MARCH

A LETTER FOR THE TURNING SEASON

Welcome to the first issue of A Winter’s Tale.

Each month, I’ll be gathering up the folklore, seasonal rhythms and small rituals that make the year feel magical.

March is my birthday month so although I’m another year older, it still brings excitement.

The light changes first, the days getting longer and I find myself opening doors briefly, just to let in the chilly, fresh air and to hear the birdsong.

There’s a quiet restlessness to March — not quite spring, not quite winter. A sense that the year is getting ready.

This month is for noticing the turning season and the first signs of Spring. So let’s put the kettle on, settle down & welcome March together.

March's full moon carries the old name of the Worm Moon, a reminder that beneath the surface the soil is beginning to stir.

March is a month of two signs:

Dreamy Pisces until the 20th and bold Aries from the 21st.

The Spring Equinox arrives on the 20th, an equal balance of day and night.

The cheerful daffodil, the emblem of Wales & St David, nods its head in the breeze, a symbol of hope & new beginnings.

The mysterious hare has been woven into the mythology of the British Isles for centuries, it appears in folklore across cultures as a symbol of transformation, intuition & wild freedom.

A Poem

From "The Spring" by Thomas Carew

Now that the winter's gone, the earth has lost

His snow-white robes, and now no more the frost

Candies the grass, or casts an icy cream

Upon the silver lake or crystal stream...
